As we begin the month of May, we hit it running! We have a couple of special dates this month. We celebrate Mother’s day as well as our 28th anniversary of being a church in the south city. God is so faithful. I believe that this month and this year will be a great victory for us at Zion and the neighborhood we live in. Revival is coming! Come this Sunday and be a part of what our God is doing in the lives of His people. He is such a present help in the times of trouble.
Speaking of help, have you noticed how many apps there are on our phones and devices to help us in our lives? There is an app for just about anything you can think of. Need to know how to bake a cake, there is an app for that. Need to learn how to change a tire on your car, there is an app for that. There are apps to aid us in our finances, our medical needs, our work out needs, just about anything you need. Name it and chances are there is an app for it. There is one area in our lives though where we will not find an app. Look as much as you want and as long as you want, you will not find an app that will aid you in carrying your cross. You can search the internet for years and never find an app that will take the place of you getting up every morning and carrying your cross. We are told to follow him and in the invitation to follow him, he lets us know the only requirement to follow is to take up our cross daily and with it in hand, we follow him. We need nothing else and in fact, to carry our cross we will need both hands, so nothing else can be held or carried except our cross. There is no app that can help us with this burden. Unlike most apps that will help all who use it, because it is like a one size fit all – my cross is mine to bear and your cross is only for you. We cannot compare the size of our crosses or how they differ. We just need to remember to not leave home without them. Carrying our cross plays an important part in our journey as we follow on to know Him more. As we carry our cross on a daily basis, it becomes our anchor to the way of discipleship that conforms us into His image. As I lay my phone down after reading the app on how to change a toilet seat, I grab my car keys to head on down to Home Depot to buy one, then, most importantly, I remember before leaving my house to pick up my cross because it is a joy to follow Him.
There is joy in the journey even while carrying a cross, Pastor Rick
